Stepchildren Speak: Ten Grown-Up Stepchildren Teach Us How to Build
Healthy Stepfamilies
Reviewed by
Dawn Miller
If you’ve ever wondered what stepchildren truly think about their
experiences growing up in a stepfamily, then you need to check out this
book. Author Susan Phillips profiles ten people in their late twenties and
early thirties who grew up in stepfamilies. The interviewees describe how
it feels to juggle in between households and to navigate homes with
different values. This book does not spare any punches – it looks at
stepfamilies with honesty – in both their bad and good aspects. In some
cases the interviewees describe selfish and even abusive behavior from
their guardians. In others they talk about positive relationships with
siblings and parental figures, the merits of learning how to accept other
people’s differences, and talents they discovered because of the influence
of a stepparent. Drawing on their own experiences, the interviewees offer
advice to stepparents and stepchildren. |

I am slightly embarrassed to admit it, but I actually own this book and
it's very helpful because it is so down-to-earth. If you are new to
stepparenting and only have time or patience to look at one book, this is
the one you need. It covers understanding your role as as stepparent,
discipline, holidays and visitation. The sections on stepteens and
communicating with your stepkids have helpful suggestions, and the section
on weddings (what do you do when the kids aren't delighted to hear you are
getting married) is practical. Chapters discussing multicultural
stepfamilies and gay stepfamilies are something you rarely find in
stepfamily books - so it is refreshing to see them here. I especially
appreciated the attention paid in this book to the many other people
outside the stepfamily who influence it - the ex-spouse, in-laws, and
grandparents. |
